How Barrels Grenada builds its platform

Commit is the engineering notebook of Barrels Grenada. Each post walks through a release: what changed, why, and how it was built, from the weather service to accounts, HR and the platform underneath.

The GMS/GAA portal, the eRegister and safer sign-in

Version 1.0.0 is the first tagged release since v0.31. Everything in it ran on staging before it reached production.

Weather service

  • Alerts: GMS alerts are now green only. Yellow, orange and red are CAP warnings, started from a Raise to warning button that opens a pre-filled CAP draft. Raising again opens the existing warning instead of a second one.
  • Impact matrix: alerts use the WMO 4×4 likelihood-by-impact grid with a suggested colour. A forecaster can override it with a reason, which stays internal and never appears in published XML, JSON or feeds.
  • Forecasts: the tropical outlook moved under Forecasts, with each storm tracked as its own system.
  • Notifications: each person chooses the bell and the email for every event; urgent events always reach the bell.

eRegister

  • An observation store and a publish gate, so each station-hour is published by exactly one source.
  • Optional review, corrections, verification rules, hour-to-hour warnings and a METAR cross-check. Pressures and humidity are calculated.

HR

  • Phone clock-in punches wait for a supervisor's approval, and one rule decides who may review them.

Accounts and security

  • Organisation-bound permissions, membership grants and team management.
  • Exact sign-in return addresses, and authenticator support for superusers.

Platform

  • A pre-migration backup gate, and web apps call the API on the internal network.
  • Every server-made PDF sends the same safe headers and file names.

The full list is in the v1.0.0 release notes.
